world cup :(
you know, all my years watching the world cup, and i have never stuck on after a match to see the players walk off and celebrate. ( Other than when brazil won in the last world cup and i caught a glimpse of a certain player that never really got to play but looked really cool coz he was ONE brazilian who seemed to have already gone for orthodontic work. :P Kaka. Hehe.) Even then, i was so fixated on brazil that I didn't pay much attention to the losing team. Or maybe I did but I just don't remember it. You know, short-term memory and all, especially when it comes to sad endings. But in recent times, the moment the final whistle blows, I go. Until yesterday. Paraguay vs Sweden. I left the tele on coz I was too lazy to move, just watching the after-match celebration. And then, for some reason, the cameras kept focusing on the Paraguay players. :(((((( They were so defeated. And so sad. And so.. completely.. haiz. I mean, the goalie was almost in tears I think. I mean, thankfully I switched the tele off after the Polish-German game! That might have been worse considering he completely didn't deserve the red card! And the Polish held out for SOOOO long. (Although the germans did have a lot of chances, and Odonkor was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!) That would have been sooooo tragic. This is something they love, it's a sport. For most of us, it's just a game that we watch, and complain about, and make silly comments on. But for them, it's their lives. Literally. How well they do in a game like this determines how much they take home to their wives and kiddies. Especially with the World Cup. Where all eyes are centered on you. Everything hangs on how well you perform in those few matches. Minimum 3, maximum 7. It's where you get noticed by fans. But yet, therein lies the irony. You have to perform well enough to be noticed, but ultimately, it isn't how good YOU are, but how well you fit in with the rest of the team. So imagine, when after two games, you're kicked out. When you've given your all to the game, but you know if only that one didn't go through. If only you had fought harder, or run harder or something like that. Urghs.
